Farming Philosophy
We are firm believers of being good stewards of the earth. We utilize a program called Integrated Pest Management. The philosophy of this program is to utilize the best aspects of organinc and traditional farming. We apply the manure from our cows, chickens, sheep, and a neighboring horse farm on the fields. Every year soil tests are sent to Penn State University to determine what, if any commercial fertilizers are needed. The use of fungicieds and pesticeds is minimized by scouting and utilizing reports and alerts from Penn State University.
Black biodegradable mulch is used as much as possible. This helps reduce weeds and the use of herbicides and being biodegradable, it does not end up in landfills. Crops are also rotated to minimize disease issues. These practices are environmentally friendly and reduce cost.
We raise the hay and grain fed to the animals. No hormones or antibiotics are used, however the feed is supplemented with minerals and vitamins to maintain their health. The sheep are pastured as much as possible throughout the year. While the cows and chickens are maintained in pens, they have room to roam and are pampered. The only thing missing is the piped in music! The diets of all of the animals are supplemented with leftover produce during the growing season. Recycling is very important.
