Sunflowers

The other day a customer commented on how beautiful the sunflowers were.  They are beautiful but they serve a purpose or two.  First of all,  they provide food for the honey bees on our farm.  Second, they have deep roots which help break up the soil and they also  bring nutrients up from the subsoil.  Then as they break down they increase the organic matter in the soil.  We also, if they are close by, let the sheep and goats graze them.  The animals then poop  on the ground, adding fertilizer to the soil.  Who knew beauty could do so much!
